Summary of Material Modifications to the New York Hotel Trades Council and Hotel Association of New York City, Inc. Industry Training Program and Scholarship Fund.
In April 2023, the Trustees of the New York Hotel Trades Council & Hotel Association of New York City, Inc. Industry Training Program & Scholarship Fund released a Summary of Material Modifications (SMM) outlining several key updates to participant benefits and eligibility. The updates include:
-
The union’s new name: the Hotel and Gaming Trades Council, AFL-CIO
-
Expansion of the Training Program to include gaming industry course offerings
-
Temporary adjustments to scholarship eligibility (for 2021 and 2022), prompted by COVID-19 impacts, such as disregarding the “currently working” requirement and using February 29, 2020 as a look-back cutoff date
-
Clarifications regarding the look-back rules for scholarship eligibility, ensuring years affected by special pandemic criteria remain governed by those criteria even as regular rules return thereafter
-
Updated definitions throughout the Summary Plan Description (SPD) to reflect inclusion of the gaming industry, and changes to the titles and references related to union, employer contributions, and participating entities
-
Changes to who may participate in training courses (including those laid-off due to COVID-19 under certain conditions), changes in attendance and assessment policies, and stipulations around class location and supervisory approval
These modifications affect how active, laid-off, and dependent members qualify for training and scholarship benefits during and beyond the pandemic period. For full details and to see how these changes might apply to you or your dependent, please refer to the attached document or contact the Fund Office.
